Collins backs Lewis-Francis move
UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins
Collins said world-class athletes were not afraid to change their coaches
UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins says more British athletes should consider switching coaches to boost their careers.

Collins' comments come after sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis left coach Steve Platt to link up with Tony Lester.

"That might be something we might need to see, not as the norm, but certainly as a far more accepted practice in the UK," said Collins.

He added athletes should look at their situation at the end of every season.

"All the world-class people I have ever worked with do that as part of their automatic function," said Collins.

"That's what I expect world-class people to do and, if they don't, I will encourage them by pushing quite hard to make those considerations and see if changes are necessary.

"There are some athletes who need to consider their situations."

Asked if a refusal to accede to his wishes might affect an athlete's funding, Collins replied: "It may."
