Radcliffe boosts women's Cup bid
Paula Radcliffe
Paula Radcliffe boosted Great Britain's bid for promotion back to the European Cup Super League with a dominant victory over 3,000m in Portugal.

The marathon world record holder was a class above the field, leading from start to finish to come home in eight minutes 50.14 seconds.

Radcliffe will race again over 5,000m on Sunday after stepping in for the injured Jo Pavey over 3,000m.

"I didn't feel great," said Radcliffe. "But it's good to get maximum points."

Radcliffe was intending to use the races in Leiria to assess her form ahead of the summer season.

"My hip was pretty badly locked up after my fall in Oregon," said Radcliffe.

"I came here knowing that I wasn't flying but I just have to knuckle down and get the points for the team."

Liz Fairs also made a significant contribution for Team GB with an impressive victory over 400m hurdles.

She took the field apart, winning in a new personal best of 55.55 seconds.

"Obviously I'm very pleased to win but I thought I could have gone a little quicker," said Fairs.

Donna Fraser buoyed Team GB by taking top spot over 400m in a season's best of 52.35.

"It's been hard coming into this but I'm getting there," the 32-year-old said.

"But when it's a team event I get more excited so it's a good boost for me."

Janine Whitlock kept up the winning streak as she claimed the pole vault title, clearing 4.40m.

The Manchester athlete attempted to raise her national record from 4.46m to 4.50m but failed to clear the bar.

Jemma Simpson, stepping in for the injured Dame Kelly Holmes, finished second in the 800m.

The 21-year-old ran wide for much of the race but powered down the home straight to steal second.

"I'm really pleased but I didn't expect it," said Simpson.

"I found some extra strength and I seem to be able to come through strong at the end."

Joice Maduaka grabbed third place in the 100m while two-time European indoor 60m champions Belgian Kim Gevaert took maximum points in 11.19.

Team GB's women's team are pushing for promotion from Group B of the European Cup after being relegated last season.
