 Kenteris's lawyer insists all charges will be dropped |
Kostas Kenteris denied claims he faked a motorbike crash to avoid a doping test before the 2004 Olympics, in his criminal court testimony on Wednesday. Fellow Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou and coach Christos Tzekos, who face similar charges, also protested their innocence in testimonies last week.
The trio were cleared in March by a Greek Athletics Federation tribunal.
But they now face a criminal court trial in Athens, where a guilty verdict may lead to suspended jail terms.
Kenteris' lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulo repeated his belief that all charges would be dropped against his client.
"There is not the slightest evidence that he is guilty of the charges laid against him," Dimitrakopoulo said.
Tzekos, former coach to the sprint duo, faces the additional charge of importing banned substances through his nutritional supplements company.
In addition to the criminal action, the group's not guilty verdict by the independent tribunal has been challenged by athletics' governing body the IAAF and the case is now heading for the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The athletes are suspended by the IAAF, while Tzekos has been banned for four years.
