Double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes finished second on her return to action in the 1500m at the final Golden League meeting of 2004 in Berlin on Sunday. The Olympic champion moved from eighth at the bell up to fourth and was in an attacking position with 200m to go.
But Russia's Tatyana Tomashova forged ahead in the closing 15m to win by 0.08 seconds in four minutes 04.41.
Holmes said: "It was good and I enjoyed the race, though Tatyana probably had a bit more determination than me."
She added: "It's been such a hectic time and obviously it is going to take a lot out of me.
"My preparation suffered and I haven't been able to focus as much as normal - I have been on the go non-stop.
"I've been out training but I haven't been back to bed early. I've been out very late and on all the chat shows in England, so you will have to forgive me for being a little bit tired.
"But I was just happy to be here."
Holmes' compatriots Hayley Tullett and Helen Clitheroe finished seventh and 10th respectively.
Tullett clocked 4:06.13 to finish ahead of Pole Wiolettaick Janowska, while Clitheroe crossed the line 0.55 later.
