Olsson to jump at Gateshead

Olsson is Olympic favourite
World triple jump champion Christian Olsson is to compete at June's Norwich Union British Grand Prix in Gateshead.

Olsson beat Olympic champion Jonathan Edwards last year at Gateshead in the Briton's final appearance on his home track and is tipped for gold in Athens.

"The British fans seem to have taken to me after the great competitions I've had against Jonathan," said Olsson.

"It'll be strange coming back to his home track without him competing, but I'm sure I'll have a chat with him."

Still only 24, Olsson is now unbeaten in 23 competitions and is regarded as the man most likely to challenge Edwards' remarkable world record of 18.29m, which has stood for more than eight years.

"It is all about looking forward for me now, not back," he said.

"To be a true champion in this sport, you need to get an Olympic medal and that's what this summer is about for me. Gateshead will hopefully be the launch pad towards that goal."

Olsson has already equaled the best ever distance for the event indoors, jumping 17.83m to claim this year's World Indoor title in Budapest.

The Norwich Union British Grand Prix takes place on 27 June.
