Pre-race favourite Evans Rutto crossed the line to win his first London title. Sammy Korir took second with Jaouad Gharib in third - but last year's winner Gezahegne Abera failed to finish after suffering a shock early injury.
Margaret Okayo took victory from Russia's Lyudmila Petrova to win her debut London Marathon.
Mexico's Saul Mendoza won the men's wheelchair race, with Britain's David Weir in second place.
Major incidents (all times BST):1151: Rutto crosses the line to take a comfortable win. Korir comes home second with Jaouad Gharib catching John Yuda in the batle for third.
1142: Rutto makes his break on the Embankment and quickly opens up a lead over a tiring Korir.
1133: Near-disaster for Rutto and Korir as they trip over a barrier and fall onto the wet cobbles. Both men jump up and keep going.
1127: Okayo crosses the line to win her first ever London Marathon.
1120: Rutto and Korir lead the men's race at 17 miles and are at the right pace for a course record.
1117: Yingjie drops back into fourth and looks way off her best.
1103: Okayo now looks unbeatable. Dita is a long way back and has once again flattered to deceive.
1054: Mexico's Saul Mendoza has won the men's wheelchair race, with Britain's David Weir in second place.
1050: Dita reaches the 19 mile mark with a lead of just five seconds over Okayo, who is closing the gap as the race enters its key stages.
1047: Britain's Jon Brown is looking comfortable in the second group of men, and looks well on track to make the Olympic qualifying mark of 2 hours 15 minutes.
1033: Dita is holding on to her lead against all expectations. She has led several big marathons only to be caught at the end, but so far she is hangjng on.
1025: Dita still leads the women's race, but Okayo is looking much more comfortable and looks to be over her bad spell.
1015: Last year's winner Gezahegne Abera pulls up injured and is out of the race. The Olympic champion had been many people's favourite.
1010: Dita crosses Tower Bridge with a lead of 100m from Okayo.
1000: Okayo is going through a bad patch and has now been overtaken by Tomescu-Dita. Gete Wami also appears to have dropped out.
0950: Okayo is now tiring and the gap between her and Constantina Tomescu-Dita is closing fast.
0945: The men's elite race and the main field get underway with a light rain still falling.
0937: Disaster for leading wheelchair athlete Saul Mendoza as he takes the wrong route around the Cutty Sark.
Mendoza follows a police motorbike round a shortcut, taking 200m off his route, and may now face disqualification.
0930: Yingjie is struggling to keep up with the second group after going off too fast in the early stages.
0915: Okayo begins to accelerate away from the pacemakers, with Yingjie attempting to hang on in second.
