Mendoza wins on debut
Francesca Porcellato and Saul Mendoza
Mexico's Saul Mendoza lived up to expectations by winning the men's wheelchair race of the London Marathon on his debut in the event.

The 37-year-old, who holds the second fastest time in the world for the 26-mile event, edged Britain's David Weir into second place.

Italy's Francesca Porcellato successfully defended her title in the women's wheelchair race.

The Paralympian finished at the front of a four-strong field in a time of two hours, 05.00 minutes.

Weir was bidding to repeat his 2002 victory but had to settle for his second successive runners-up spot.

Training partner Tushar Patel finished promisingly in fourth place.

Britain's Paula Craig improved on her third place last year to take the women's runners-up spot in 2:07.52.

But the 40-year-old's time was not fast inside to see her qualify for this summer's Paralympic Games in Athens.

Sweden's Gunilla Wallengren finished in third place on her debut in the event with Britain's Michelle Lewis fourth.
