Chambers prepares for double
Britain's Dwain Chambers
Chambers has a season's best of 10.03 seconds
Dwain Chambers will tackle both the 100 and 200m at the Norwich Union Super League meeting in Gateshead on 13 July.

The European 100m champion is targeting double sprint gold in August's World Championships in Paris.

With a class field heading to Gateshead, Chambers believes it is the ideal opportunity to test himself against his rivals.

"Paris is the main focus for this season and I'm currently considering doubling up in the 100m and 200m," said Chambers.

"Competition is fierce between the British sprinters and I need to keep all my options open."

The 25-year-old will renew his rivalry with fellow British sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis in the 100m.

Lewis-Francis clocked 10.12 seconds to beat Chambers in Ostrava but Chambers then turned the tables beating the Birchfield Harrier last time out in Glasgow.

Commonwealth gold medallist Kim Collins and US champion Bernard Williams will also push the British duo hard.

Gateshead will also host two of the world's top 400m runners with Jamaica's Commonwealth gold medallist Michael Blackwood and reigning world champion Avard Moncur of the Bahamas both sceduled to appear.

Britain's Daniel Caines will be looking to gain a psychological advantage over two of the likely finalists at this August's World Championships in Paris

"Michael and Avard are quality athletes and will provide me with a tough test at just the right time," said Caines.

"I'm working towards Paris and the meeting in Gateshead will be a good barometer of my progress this season"

Iwan Thomas, Jamie Baulch and local athlete Jared Deacon are the other British athletes in the 400m field.

British quartet Marlon Devonish, Commonwealth bronze medallist Darren Campbell, Christian Malcolm and Julian Golding will be challenging in the 200m.

Chambers finished third in Britain's 200m rankings last year though he did not compete in the event at the major championships.

World indoor pole vault champion Svetlana Feofanova is another big name who will also be at Gateshead for the meeting.

The Russian broke the world indoor record on each of her last three appearances in Britain earlier this year, the final one at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham where she took the gold medal with a clearance of 4.80 metres.
