Dwain makes gains in Glasgow

By Steve Cram
BBC Sport

Dwain Chambers' winning time was not the greatest but it was important for him to win the 100m in Glasgow.

Coming off two defeats to Mark Lewis-Francis, another defeat would have made it difficult for him going into the World Championships trials.

Dwain Chambers celebrates victory in Glasgow
Chambers won easily in the end
But he ran really well in Greece during the week and I think that helped him.

He started very well, the others got left behind and Dwain won quite easily in the end.

Tim Montgomery isn't running that well at the moment, and I think Dwain had most to lose.

Had he not performed as well as he did he would have been struggling in the coming weeks, but now he can look ahead with confidence.

Mark has had quite a few races in a short space of time and speaking to him afterwards he said a few muscles were feeling tight.

He will probably want to go away now and rest for a bit with the trials coming up.

I thought Chris Rawlinson's performance was the best of the day.

To run 48.4 in those breezy conditions was very good and that is three back-to-back races now at the same level.

To get beaten by a third rate American relay team was not good
It was a shame Eric Thomas fell at the first hurdle because he won the American championships and it would have been good to see Chris take him on.

But behind Felix Sanchez the event is wide open and there is not a lot to choose between five or six athletes.

If Chris is beating the best of the Americans then he knows he is right in there for the World Championships.

It was a good win for John Mayock in the 1500m because he hasn't had one like that for a while.

But the problem for him and guys like Anthony Whiteman will be the qualifying time of 3.34.90 for the Worlds.

The relay squad had a poor race
It is going to be difficult for them to make that, and it is not just about finishing first or second in the trials.

Michael East will probably be happiest of the middle-distance runners despite his third place in the 800m.

To knock nearly a second off his personal best was great speed work and he will think he can do the same at 1500m.

The men's 4x100m relay was a bit of a disappointment.

We won't have that many medal opportunities at the Worlds and the 4x100m is certainly one of them. To get beaten by a third-rate US team was not good, because only Bernard Williams will probably be in the American team in Paris.

You don't get that many opportunities to run together and I think they need to look at the order.

The best foreign performance was Pavel Potapovich in the men's 3,000m steeplechase.

The Russian started slowly but stormed away from the rest and he is a name to look out for later in the summer.
