IAAF urges coach to denounce drugs
Marion Jones
Jones is a triple Olympic gold medalist
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has said that the former coach of Ben Johnson should be allowed to continue working if he issues a statement condemning drug use.

Charlie Francis - Johnson's coach when the Canadian was stripped of his 1998 Olympic 100m medal - has been spotted working with Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery.

The American sprint pair have been asked to explain their relationships to Francis by the IAAF, which is concerned about the image of the sport.

He should be very clear, very honest and very credible

Istyen Gyulai
IAAF general secretary

Francis was banned for life from coaching Canadian team members in 1989, after admitting introducing Johnson to steroids, but he is still allowed to work with other athletes.

But IAAF general secretary Istyen Gyulai believes he should be given the chance to renounce his former views before it interferes with the situation.

"There is an understanding that after 13 years there should be a chance given to everyone," he said.

"If he has a totally new definition regarding the way to success in the sport, this is the only way.

"It should be very clear, very honest and very credible."
