Holmes to face Ceplak
Kelly Holmes finished third in the 800m at the European Championships in Munich

Kelly Holmes and Jolanda Ceplak will face each other in the Great North Mile on 5 October.

The eagerly-anticipated showdown will take place at Newcastle Quayside a day before the BUPA Great North Run.

The pair became embroiled in a drugs row after Ceplak beat Holmes into third to claim the 800m European Championship title earlier this month.

After the Slovenian's victory, Holmes implied that some of her opponents were using drugs.

Ceplak angrily demanded an apology from Holmes, insisting her rapid transition to world class in the last two years was all down to hard training.

Holmes, who shares the same manager as Ceplak, maintains she had not been accusing her rival of any wrongdoing.

According to Ceplak the two women settled their differences in a private meeting last week.

"No, we didn't shake hands. We actually embraced and kissed each other," she revealed.

"The matter is now closed. As for the race in Newcastle I have never run in one before. But it sounds very interesting."

Organisers insist the Great Mile Race is not a showdown between the two athletes.

"We want only the best to compete in the event," explained Peter Elliott, who brokered the deal.

"Ceplak and Holmes fit the bill perfectly."

Holmes will be defending the title she won a year ago while Ceplak ventures into new territory never having run a mile road race before in her life.
