America's Coby Miller took the second spot, while compatriot Jon Drummond finished in third. In the women's triple jump Britain's European champion Ashia Hansen led from the first round. Heavy rain made 15m jumping out of the question but Hansen won with a stadium-record 13.96m in the third round. Yelena Oleynikoba of Russia was second (13.76m). Jonathan Edwards won the men's event with a superb jump of 17.54m. Russia's Igor Spasovkhodskiy (17.32m) was second while young Briton Phillips Idowu (17.28m) took third spot. It was disappointment for Commonwealth gold medallist Kelly Holmes who finished second in the women's 1500m despite leading with 100m to go. Earlier, American Jearl Miles Clarke eased to victory in the women's 400m with a time of 51.65 secs in a slow race due to heavy rain. A photo finish for the other positions awarded second to USA's Monique Hennagan, with Scotland's Commonwealth silver medallist Lee McConnell taking the third spot. It was an American one-two in the men's 400m hurdles as Joey Wood and James Carter edged Britain's Matt Elias into third place. Russia's Sergey Makrov, runner-up to Britain's Steve Backley in the European Championships in Munich, took revenge in the javelin. Despite the appalling conditions he landed his third-round throw out at 87.99m to beat Backley into second on 83.06m. It was mixed fortunes for Britain in the 4x100m relays as they claimed victory in the men's event but failed to finish the women's after a dropped baton.
