Chris Rawlinson will take no further part in the trials after being disqualified after the first heat of the 400m hurdles.

The gold medal hopeful, who criticised the decision to have separate trials for next month's Games, won his heat in 50.23 seconds.

But minutes later Rawlinson, who finished well ahead of his closest challenger, was disqualified because his trailing leg did not clear hurdle seven - and he will miss Sunday's final.

British record

Kelly Morgan smashed the British javelin record with the fourth best distance in the world this year.

Morgan, coached by 1984 Olympic silver medallist David Ottey, broke the three-year-old record with 63.03m in the opening round.

But Mick Hill, who has won medals at the last four Commonwealth Games, finished outside the automatic places and will almost certainly miss the games.

Triple jumper Ashia Hansen ensured she would get the chance to defend the title she won in Malaysia four years ago after convincingly winning her final.

The 30-year-old triumphed with a leap of 14.03m while Michelle Griffith will hope to join her in England's team, although her mark of 12.99m, which earned her second place, was one centimetre below the qualifying standard.

Personal best

Mick Jones, winner of the Commonwealth silver medal in 1998, clinched his place in the English team for a fourth time when winning the hammer with a throw of 72.16m.

Diane Allahgreen took the 100m hurdles from Natasha Danvers with a time of 13.07secs, while Damien Greaves took the 110m hurdles in 13.73secs.

World indoor champion Daniel Caines smashed his own personal best in the 400m heats.

Caines clocked a time of 45.30sec, an improvement on the 45.37 he ran at the Sydney Olympics, while Ben Challenger comfortably won the high jump.
