| Sunday, 2 June, 2002, 23:09 GMT 00:09 UK Holmes continues to shine Holmes has started the season in good form Britain's Kelly Holmes produced her fastest 1500m since 1997 as she recorded an easy win in the Fanny Blankers-Koen Grand Prix meeting in Hengelo on Sunday. The 32-year-old continued her impressive start to the season with a time of four minutes 3.93 seconds to take victory in the Netherlands.
Holmes saw off the challenge of Irina Lishchinkska of the Ukraine and Poland's Lidia Chojeckato follow up her victory over 800m in Desau, Germany on Wednesday. "That's my fastest 1500 for five years," said Holmes, who was named 'Woman Athlete of the Meeting'. For the first time in years Holmes has started the summer season without any injury problems and an intensive winter's training in South Africa seems to be paying dividends. "I really felt strong and although out on my own I flew down the finishing straight," she added. Her next outing is expected to be in the Commonwealth Games trials in Manchester later this month. Holmes won the 1500m Commonwealth gold medal in 1994 and picked up silver over the distance four years ago. | See also: 31 Mar 02 | Commonwealth Games 2002 30 Oct 01 | Athletics 12 Sep 01 | Athletics Top Athletics stories now: Links to more Athletics stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
