Players from the Somali Star team celebrate at the Solent heats |
The final Your Game heat took place in the Solent region with teams from Portsmouth and Southampton competing for a place in the national final at St James' Park in Newcastle in May. In sublime footballing conditions, the Southampton University Wide Lane Complex hosted a competitive men's tournament, with Portsmouth and Southampton legends Guy Whittingham and Lawrie McMenemy in attendance.
In the Cup final, St Mary's, a team drawn from Northam 521 Youth Club and the Baseline Youth Club in Southampton, edged out Newtown in a close-fought 1-0 victory, with the only goal coming just before the break.
St Mary's will be joined in Newcastle by The Extinguishers, a team from the Portsmouth Foyer, a charity group for young homeless people, who edged a keenly contested Fair Play award.
Former Southampton manager McMenemy said: "I think the event in general is terrific and you can see the enjoyment in everyone's faces, the winners and losers, and that's a good sign.

"I think it's good that people get a prize for fair play as well. "You can't always win, but you can try and win properly, and that's what they've all tried to do today, so well done to everybody."
Jazz Batty, of Southampton Football Club's Saints in the Community project, summed up the day.
"Football's a great leveller. It brings people from all walks of life together, and tournaments like this just encourage that. It forms new relationships, new links, new partnerships as well."
All players had the opportunity to find out about free FA coaching and refereeing courses, and about applying for Football Foundation grants.
Five Live's Nigel Adderley was also on hand to offer commentary tips, and 1Xtra's G Money gave players the chance to test their DJ skills.
Your Game is a partnership between the BBC, the Football Association, the Premier League, Kick it Out, the Football Foundation, Street League and the Professional Footballers' Association.
