Early days

McGrath announced his arrival on the Test arena in 1993 as a rangy 23-year-old, replacing Merv Hughes for the first Test against New Zealand.

He repaid the faith of the selectors by taking three wickets, including a first Test scalp of Mark Greatbatch, but it was some years before he could command a regular berth in the Australian side.
