Cape Verde win Nations Cup opener
Georges Santos made his first international appearance against Mauritania

Mauritania 0-2 Cape Verde
Nouakchott, Friday

Cape Verde have claimed the first win in the qualifying campaign for the Nations Cup in Tunisia in 2004.

A goal either side of half-time saw the new-look Cape Verde side easily take the lead in Group 5.

The West African island's football association has decided to look far and wide, rather than just to home-based players and Portugal, to make up its team.

The new policy appears to be paying dividends.

Cape Verde still have a long way to go if they are to entertain ideas of qualifying for Tunisia 2004.

They have never made the Nations Cup finals before, and with Togo and Kenya in the side, their toughest tests are yet to come.

Still, this will be a huge morale boost for the tiny island nation, and a warning that the group favourites should not disregard them.
