Rusedski and Murray were playing together for the first time

Greg Rusedski and Jamie Murray won Saturday's Davis Cup doubles rubber to secure victory for Great Britain over the Netherlands in Birmingham.

The British pair defeated Robin Haase and Rogier Wassen 6-1 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-5) to give the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five tie.

Great Britain will now move on to a play-off in September for a place in the elite World Group of 16 nations.

But they will be without Rusedski, who announced his retirement after his win.

The two remaining singles matches on Sunday will be dead rubbers.

It was the perfect Davis Cup debut for doubles specialist Murray.

"I loved it, every single minute of it, from the first shot to the last," the 21-year-old told BBC Sport.

"Hopefully there'll be many more to come."

Davis Cup veteran Rusedski added: "Jamie played a great match. It was a great debut.

"For our first time playing together, I thought we played pretty well."

Murray showed no nerves as Britain raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and it was on his service game that the hosts clinched the first set 6-1.

But Haase and Wassen, who had looked overawed in the opening set, found their feet and broke to go 3-1 up in the second, which they won 6-3.

The match looked to have turned when Murray was broken for the first time at 2-2 in the third set.

However, the British duo then rattled off four games in a row to edge ahead in the match.

There were no breaks in the fourth set, which went into a tie-break.

Some inspired play from Murray put Britain in control but it was Rusedski who fittingly clinched the victory, converting the fourth match point with a clever volley.

Great Britain captain John Lloyd was delighted to be back in contention for a World Group place after his second victory in his second match in charge.

"I fancy our chances against anybody, especially if we get a home draw," he said.
