Tim Henman reached the third round of the US Open with a 6-2 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-1) win over France's Jerome Golmard. The fifth seed won the first two sets comfortably before Golmard hit a rich vein of form midway through the third.
The Frenchman unleashed a series of vicious forehands to take the set and established a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
However, Henman battled back and entertained the crowd with a near-perfect tiebreak to book a meeting with Czech qualifier Michal Tabara.
Tabara overcame a hamstring injury to recover from two sets to one down against 26th seed Mardy Fish.
Henman almost missed the US Open with a back injury that flared up again at the weekend, but he believes it is now on the mend. "I'm pleased to get through. I feel physically I was a lot better than I was in my first match and that's a good sign," he said.
"It's still not quite right, it's still a little stiff and mentally I lost a bit of confidence in it.
"But I'm getting that back and hopefully there'll be a chance to improve again in my next match."
