Friday's ATP Tour round-up
Monte Carlo Masters
Ferrero is on course for a second successive Monte Carlo title |
Top seeds Juan Carlo Ferrero and Carlos Moya remain on course for a repeat of last year's final after both eased through their quarter-final encounters. Defending champion Ferrero produced an awesome display against fellow Spaniard Alberto Martin.
Ferrero came through 6-0 6-2 in just 62 minutes, after opening with 10 straight games against the qualifier.
And he was delighted to make such short work of the quarter-final encounter after struggling to beat Gaston Gaudio the previous day.
"I am very happy to have come through a short match today having had to go three sets on Thursday," said Ferrero.
"I'd had two difficult matches in the previous rounds against Felix Mantilla and Gaston Gaudio and I'm glad to have won so quickly."
Coria's very strong and has a lot of confidence - I'll need to play at my best level |
The world number three will meet unseeded Vince Spadea in the last four, after the American had a convincing victory over Italian qualifier Filippo Volandri.
Spadea came through 6-1 6-3 with some intelligent hitting from the back of the court, interspersed with blistering winners.
The 28-year-old is now in his second Masters Series semi-final of the year after losing out to Lleyton Hewitt at Indian Wells.
And it marks a remarkable comeback for a man who was ranked 19 in the world four years ago before slipping out of the top 200.
"It's exciting to see the commitment I made to give this game a more serious try pay off," said Spadea, who trains with former Pete Sampras coach Pete Fischer.
"I think I'm a better tennis player now than when I was in the top 20."
Second seed Moya beat in-form Frenchman Julien Boutter 7-6 6-2 and will meet Guillermo Coria, who thrashed Juan-Ignacio Chela 6-1 6-1 in an all-Argentine battle.
"It will be very tough," said Moya. "He's very strong and has a lot of confidence. I will need to play at my best level."
