Sunday's games

Newcastle beat Italian side Treviso 35-5 as they overhauled a 19-point deficit from the first leg to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The Falcons shrugged off the driving wind and rain to score five tries and clinch a last-eight encounter with Saracens.

Newcastle's tries came from Hugh Vyvyan (2), Phil Godman and Ian Peel (2), with Liam Botham converting all five.

Connacht squeezed into a quarter-final tie against Pontypridd with a dramatic victory over Narbonne at Corinthian Park.

The Irish side went into the game trailing by 15 points following their 42-27 defeat in France last week.

But first-half tries by Darren Yapp and Marnus Uijs and 13 points from the boot of veteran Eric Elwood overturned the deficit.

Saturday's games

Bath, inspired by the pace of a rejuvenated Iain Balshaw, secured a quarter-final tie against Montauban as they thrashed Bridgend 38-10 at the Rec.

Balshaw, who scored a try in the first leg at Brewery Field eight days ago, added two more as Bath comfortably clawed back a two-point deficit.

It was a sweet victory for Bath's Welsh contingent, particularly skipper Jonathan Humphreys, who was leading the side in the absence of the suspended Danny Grewcock.

There was revenge for the Welsh clubs as Pontypridd ended Leeds' Parker Pen campaign after a 19-19 draw at Headingley.

When the hosts took a 16-9 lead at the interval it looked as though they might be on course to overhaul the visitors, who went into the match with a 14-point cushion after the first leg.

However, Leeds ran out of steam and a late try from Brett Davey ensured that Pontypridd clinched a draw and a quarter-final berth.

The international class of France's Thomas Castaignede and Australian legend Tim Horan proved too much for Colomiers as Saracens ran out 30-19 winners.

Castaignede slotted 18 points with the boot to give Saracens a quarter-final berth.

Friday's game

On Friday, Borders lost out to Montauban to crash out of the European Challenge Cup in the second round.

The Scots, enjoying just their first season in existence, lost out 12-6 at Netherdale to allow the French side to progress 31-22 on aggregate.

The home side's points came via penalties from Tanner Vili and Kevin Utterson.

But both men combined to miss four other kicks at goal.

Montauban replied with penalties from Benoit Albert (2) and Sebastien Fauque with Pierre Broncan adding a decisive drop goal eight minutes from time.

Apart from a couple of Utterson breaks in the first half, Borders rarely looked like breaching the strong French line.
