The punt is an important skill every kicker should master.
It comes into its own in attacking situations.
A high kick - often called an up-and-under - creates confusion and puts the opposition defence under pressure.
This is very common on the fifth tackle in attack.
A long and accurate punt kick up the field is rewarded by the 40/20 rule.
A good punt kick can also gain metres for your side after the opposition give away a penalty.
STEP ONE
To get the most distance, hold the ball at a 35 degree angle. You won't need a protractor to do this!
Practice a couple of times holding the ball at different angles to see which angle gets you the best distance.
STEP TWO
If you are right-footed, put your LEFT hand towards the front of the ball, with your RIGHT hand towards the back, with the ball tilted 35 degrees towards the left.
Reverse the process if you are left footed: Right hand towards the front of the ball, left hand on the rear, ball tilted 35 degrees towards the right.
It sounds complicated, but it is easy once you get your hands on the ball.
STEP THREE
Step forward and put your non-kicking foot into the ground for a good, stable base.
Drop the ball onto your kicking foot and aim to make contact with your bootlaces with your toe pointing downwards at contact.
STEP FOUR
Follow your kicking foot through after making contact with the ball.
Extend your opposite arm extending if you need to regain your balance.
