Gerard Greene caused the first big upset of the British Open by sending world number six Ken Doherty spinning to a 5-2 defeat on Tuesday. The Kent-based Northern Irishman barely missed a ball as he fired in breaks of 85, 69, 74 and 78 to lead 4-1 before clinching victory two frames later.
Jimmy White was another first-round loser as he was beaten 5-2 by Tony Drago.
Alan McManus also bowed out at the second-round stage, edged out 5-4 by England's Mark Davis.
But fellow Scot Stephen Hendry made it safely through, beating Welshman Dominic Dale 5-2.
Graeme Dott and Joe Perry were also winners.

Greene, the world number 38, will now play either Steve Davis or Joe Swail in round three.
"In the past, I let myself get wound up during matches and I lost a lot of games I should have won," said Greene.
"Beating Ken is a great result, and it's the most consistent I've been in a match. When I got in I didn't miss."
Doherty won his two frames with a pair of centuries - 127 and 130 - but admitted he was outplayed.
"Gerard never missed a ball," said Doherty. "I'm disappointed to lose but I can't have too many complaints."
White knocked in a 130 as he took the first two frames against Drago.
But the Maltese player then took over and reeled off the next five frames.

"Jimmy started so well it was scary but after I came back to 2-2 I was the better player all the way," Drago said. "It was a fantastic atmosphere. When you go out in front of a large crowd like that you can easily crack up, and it's happened to me before.
"But I feel much happier at the moment and made the most of my chances."
Hendry is hoping he has finally silenced the doubts over his new cue after beating Dale.
Hendry knocked in breaks of 134, 54 and 120 to lead 4-0 before Welshman Dale closed to 4-2.
The cue Hendry used to win a record 34 ranking titles, which included seven world titles, was smashed by Heathrow baggage handlers in early September.
It was repaired but did not feel the same, and Hendry is now using a new two-piece model.
He lost his first match with the cue when Michael Holt beat him 5-3 at last month's LG Cup.
"Within days of practising with this new one I was making centuries, so I'm happy with it," said the Scot.
