The rider has a massive part to play in a big race, particularly on a tricky course where position is all-important.

Most trainers prefer to have a regular pilot for their horses, so the jockey and animal are familiar with each other.

But there are occasions when the jockey is called in at the last-minute, possibly because of injury to the usual rider.
