Nannina, ridden by Jimmy Fortune, won by two lengths |
Jimmy Fortune guided Nannina, the 6-1 joint favourite, to victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Pushed into the lead about two furlongs out, the John Gosden-trained daughter of Medicean stormed clear to run out a comfortable winner in the mile race.
She won by two lengths from Flashy Wings, with Nasheej three-quarters
of a length away in third.
Speciosa, the Stan James 1000 Guineas winner, broke early and was switched from the outside of the field to take the rails position and grab an early lead.
She was still in front turning for home from Silca's Sister but eventually came home ninth.
Nannina showed that her run in the Guineas was wrong by powering home against a quality field.
No other horse could get near the Cheveley Park Stud filly as she stamped her
authority on the Group One contest in the closing stages.

"She's a very good filly," said Fortune. "She did nothing but progress last year and she beat the best around at the backend. Today she showed what a very good filly she is.
"When I rode her in a bit of work last week she gave me a really great feel and Robert Havlin deserves a lot of credit because he rides her every day at home.
"She is not straight forward at home and she is a bit of a character. She didn't like the ground at Newmarket and the boss told me if she wasn't enjoying it to go easy on her."
An elated Gosden said: "The reason she disappointed so badly in the Guineas was the soft ground.
"It hadn't rained for five weeks and then we had an inch and a half on the morning of the race. She hated it."
He added: "It's nice to finally win this race, I've been second in it three times."
