Putney Bridge, built in 1886, overlooks the start line marked by a small stone inscribed with the letters UBR - University Boat Race - 100 metres upstream.

In order for the crews to start level, the racing boats are attached to two dinghies or "stakeboats" held by anchors in the centre of the incoming tide.

Once the race has begun, the crews cannot change station unless they can do so without interfering or fouling the opposition.

They race the first minute along a line of moored boats - a large Black Buoy is the final and most visible of these moorings.

The buoy is the initial target for the coxes and it marks the end of the opening stages before the crews jostle for position to take advantage of the first bend.
