Newquay-based Winter is regarded as the UK's number one surfer

Cornish surfers Alan Stokes and Russell Winter are the only Brits to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Boardmasters in Newquay.

Both Stokes and Winter are based in Newquay and their knowledge of the local conditions at Fistral Beach has helped them progress.

Defending champion Wiggoly Dantas is also through to the last eight of the annual surf competition.

The first of the quarter-final heats gets underway on Friday morning.
