Local surfers qualify in Newquay

French surfer Beven was one of the top competitors on day one

Cornwall's top surfers have made it through to the next round of the annual Boardmasters contest in Newquay.

Mark Harris was the first Cornish surfer to qualify from his heat with Reubin Pearce following suit.

Local surfers Matt Capel, Alan Stokes and Sam Lamiroy have also navigated into the next round.

The contest in the 'Best Wave' and 'Best Average Heat' categories, were dominated by French surfer Patrick Beven and the USA's Travis Beckham.

Newquay-based surfer Alan Stokes is another of the Cornish contingent to progress through the heats.

Stokes is currently leading the UK Professional surf tour and has now successfully navigated the first two rounds of the Boardmasters.
