Although the stadia are certain to get the thumbs-up, there are other factors that have raised concerns with the International Olympic Committee and the wider public.

One of those is the air pollution in Beijing.

Two years ago, the European Space Agency revealed the Chinese capital had seriously high levels of nitrogen dioxide.

"We know that the organisers and the government at all levels are dedicating a lot of effort to creating the appropriate conditions for the Games air quality," said IOC president Jacques Rogge, who has warned events will not go ahead if pollution levels are too high.
