Darren Campbell has been selected to run for Britain in the 200m at the Olympics in Athens next month. Campbell had qualified for the 100m at the Olympic trials in Manchester at the weekend but withdrew from the 200m final with hamstring and rib injuries.
But the 200m silver medallist from Sydney four years ago was chosen to compete in both distances.
Paula Radcliffe, Denise Lewis, Steve Backley and Kelly Holmes were also named in a 47-strong British team.
It will be the smallest squad Britain has taken to a Games since Montreal in 1976.
More athletes could be picked next week, however, if they meet the qualifying standard, including long jumper Chris Tomlinson and American-born 400m runner Malachi Davis.
Lewis' gold in the heptathlon in Sydney was one of six athletics medals for Britain.
But she will only compete in Athens if she passes a fitness test on the foot injury which she aggravated in Manchester.
Radcliffe, who has indicated that she will concentrate on the marathon, has also been selected for the 10,000m as a fall-back option.

And Holmes has been picked for the 1500m and 800m, although she intends to focus on the longer distance. Decathlete Dean Macey, who has yet to achieve the qualifying standard, will attempt to do so this weekend.
"It was unfortunate that the unseasonable weather in Manchester subdued some of the performances, which would have been world-class," said Max Jones, team leader for the squad.
"The outlook for Athens is looking more optimistic after the trials than it was several weeks ago but it will still be a tough call to match our performance in Sydney."
Campbell hurt himself in a fall at the end of the 100m final in Manchester, in which he finished second.
Having secured his Athens place in the 100m, along with Jason Gardener and Mark Lewis-Francis, he was left with an anxious wait after deciding not to race in the 200m final. But his track record ensured he got the nod to join Chris Lambert and Christian Malcolm - first and second in Manchester - with Marlon Devonish and Julian Golding missing out.
There was some consolation for Devonish when he was named with Campbell, Gardener, Lewis-Francis, Lambert and Malcolm in the 4x100m relay squad.
The selectors have named just two athletes for the men's 400m, Tim Benjamin and Daniel Caines, raising the possibility that the American-born Davis could be called up.
Davis, who was issued with a British passport last Thursday, has reached the required qualifying standard. He will race against Sean Baldock in Loughborough in a possible showdown to decide who takes the third spot for Athens.
Davis is also likely to be named in the 4x400m relay squad.
Medal hope Chris Rawlinson has been selected for the 400m hurdles - along with Matt Douglas - and the 4x400m squad.
Other call-ups to the men's team include Phillips Idowu and Nathan Douglas in the triple jump, Matt O'Dowd in the marathon and Rob Newton and Andy Turner in the 110m hurdles.
The women's team includes Joice Maduaka and Abi Oyepitan in the 200m and Donna Fraser, Lee McConnell and Christine Ohurugu in the 400m.
Jo Fenn will compete in the 800m and Hayley Tullett in the 1500m after winning bronze at the world championships in Paris last year.
Jade Johnson will be the sole long jumper, with Kelly Sotherton selected for the heptathlon.
