Rutherford, 21, from Milton Keynes has struggled with a host of injuries since winning a European silver medal in 2006

But he stormed back into the spotlight by winning the British Championships, nailing the Olympic qualifying standard of 8.20m with his final jump, to see off team-mate Chris Tomlinson.

It was a phenomenal achievement considering his preparation had involved not sleeping for a week to be with his dying grandfather. He described it as the "worst week of my life".

Qualifying in the long jump begins on 16 August, with the final two days later, starting at 1210 BST.
