An American with British parents, Hopkins was six years into his MotoGP career before he achieved a podium finish, coming third at China's Shanghai circuit last year.

The 2007 season was his best yet, as he came fourth in the championship while riding for Rizla Suzuki. The 24-year-old's high-profile switch to Kawasaki will mean he has a point to prove.

West, 26, has struggled with poor machinery and lack of funding in his career. The Australian joined Kawasaki mid-term last year.
