The car that took the great Jim Clark to his first world title introduced the first of many design innovations pioneered by Lotus founder and designer Colin Chapman.

Following on from Cooper's mid-engined revolution, Chapman produced the next major technological breakthrough with the first one-piece, or monocoque, chassis.

The aluminium sheet chassis superseded the tubular designs used previously, providing much greater stiffness for less weight and a smaller frontal area - and therefore less drag.

The chassis' extra stiffness allowed Chapman to use a more supple suspension, providing performance benefits in slower corners.
