In a dramatic about-turn, Bernie Ecclestone has been trying to reverse the FIA's decision - of which he was a part of - over the reinstatement of the Bahrain Grand Prix. Formula 1's 80-year-old chief executive has had a change of heart, and written to the sport's 12 teams urging them to express their discontent and demand a re-vote.

FIA president Jean Todt says that Renault has told him it will quit Formula 1 if the new engine regulations are not implemented in 2013. A new four-cylinder turbo engine is planned to replace the current V8's as the sport attempts to be more eco-friendly.

McLaren's Jenson Button believes he can win his first race of the season in Canada this weekend. "I've never won in North America and I think we have the pace, the development, and the momentum to have a good shot at changing that," he said. "I'm really looking forward to it."

This weekend's Canadian Grand Prix will again see Pirelli's soft and super-soft compound tyres in use - but very different wear patterns to Monaco are predicted. "The characteristics of Canada mean that we're unlikely to see a one-stop strategy," said Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery. "But we're hoping that the racing will be just as close, and that the opportunities for overtaking will give teams even more possibilities than Monaco in terms of race strategy."

Former world champion Damon Hill is to step down as President of the British Racing Drivers' Club, after five years in the role. He will officially relinquish his position at the club's Annual General Meeting on 25 August.
