Rubens Barrichello headed home Michael Schumacher for a Ferrari one-two in the Hungarian Grand Prix, clinching the constructors' title for the Italian team.

Barrichello managed to hold off Schumacher through two rounds of pit stops, even though the world champion appeared to be faster.

The two men were in a league of their own, leaving Ralf Schumacher trailing nearly half a minute behind in third place.

The McLarens of Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard recovered somewhat from a disastrous qualifying session to finish fourth and fifth.

They leapfrogged the Jordan of Giancarlo Fisichella and Sauber's Felipe Massa at their second pit stops.

The Jordan and Sauber were able to be so competitive because their Bridgestone tyres were much better suited to the track than the rival Michelins, used by Williams and McLaren.

Button spun out of sixth place before half distance

The discrepancy in the tyres helped explain the sheer size of Ferrari's advantage - they also use Bridgestones.

So after being pushed all the way by Williams in Germany three weeks ago, Ferrari were utterly dominant in a soporific race.

The Italian team made it clear before the event that their priority was clinching the constructors' title, for the fourth consecutive year.

They also want to try to ensure Barrichello finishes second to Schumacher in the championship, which the German won two races ago.

Barrichello has now assumed that position, five points ahead of Ralf Schumacher and the other Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

That is almost certainly why Schumacher did not try harder than he did to pass his team-mate.

Schumacher came out of the pits from his second stop behind Nick Heidfeld's Sauber, but seemed to hold back rather than push the backmarker as hard as he would normally do.

That gave Barrichello enough of a breathing space to complete his second stop the following lap without losing the lead.

Ralf Schumacher had a quiet race to third place, a long way behind the Ferraris but comfortably ahead of anyone else.

McLaren produced a brilliant tactical race to recover from qualifying 10th and 11th.

Raikkonen and Coulthard looked combative from the start and the team kept their drivers out longer to leapfrog drivers in front of them.

They were running sixth and seventh before the second pit stops, but the superior speed of the McLarens got them ahead of Fisichella and the Sauber of Massa.

Raikkonen ran the early laps behind Montoya, but the Colombian ruined his chances by running wide at the third last corner on lap 21.

The Williams bounced over the gravel and several of its aerodynamic parts were broken off.

Jenson Button also made a costly mistake for Renault.

He was in sixth place early in the race, leading Montoya and Raikkonen.

But 10 laps after Montoya's error, Button made one of his own, putting a wheel off the track while turning into the penultimate corner and spinning into the gravel.

British rookie Anthony Davidson spun off while running in last place.
