European stats review

Argentine Angel Cabrera
Big-hitting Argentine Angel Cabrera muscled his way to easily the best victory of his career for a two-shot win in the BMW Championship at Wentworth, his massive tee shots again laying the foundation for his triumph.

Cabrera, whose career was launched thanks to the financial backing of countryman Eduardo Romero, topped the Reuters Stats driving distance category with a whopping average off the tee of 309.5 yards a time.

That impressive figure was boosted on the final day when he really opened his shoulders to record an astonishing average of 328.5 yards a time on the drives measured, one of the highest individual round figures ever recorded in the event or in Europe.

Cabrera stands seventh in the season's driving distance Stats with an average blast of 305.3 yards off the tee.

However, enormous power with the driver does not necessarily lead to huge cheques.

All aspects of the game need to be in tip-top order too and Cabrera has shown time and time again he is no one-trick pony.

David Howell in action
Howell was in superb form with his putter at Wentworth
Last year, he topped the Reuters Stats putting figures for greens hit in regulation and again at Wentworth on Sunday, his putter was nicely hot as he rammed in 13 birdies and three eagles for rounds of 70-70-66-67 (15 under par overall, 273).

He averaged exactly 28 putts a round with a return of 1.672 a time for each green hit in regulation figures.

There were plenty of those too. Overall, Cabrera hit 51 greens in regulation (70.8% for seventh best in the tournament).

Cabrera, who was celebrating his third Tour win and second in England having won the B&H International Open in 2002, had a 50% success rate exactly in fairways hit (28 out of 56) which, given his huge length with the driver, is a decent return.

The Argentine had twice previously finished second in the blue ribband event of the Tour, in 2001 and also last year.

Meanwhile, England's David Howell continued his superb run of form with the putter which earned him fourth place (279), having finished runner-up in each of the proceeding two weeks despite some erratic driving.

This time he averaged exactly 27 putts a round and now tops the putts per round stats with 28.1 for the season.
