GB&I stay on course
Colin Montgomerie (left) congratulates Justin Rose

Great Britain and Ireland will go into Sunday's singles leading 10-8 after Saturday's foursomes at the Seve Trophy in Spain.

GB&I captain Colin Montgomerie enjoyed his first win of the event when he teamed up with Padraig Harrington for a 2&1 victory over Miguel Angel Jimenez and Ignacio Garrido.

That put his side 9-6 up, but Europe closed the gap with Alex Cejka and Raphael Jacquelin keeping their 100% record with win over Westwood and Howell (5&3).

And Frederik Jacobson and Niclas Fasth made it 9-8 by also staying unbeaten with a victory over Paul Lawrie and Paul Casey (3&2).

But GB&I restored their two-point advantage when Justin Rose and Ian Poulter overcame Sergio Garcia and Thomas Bjorn 2&1 in the last foursomes.

Earlier, Montgomerie and Rose, three down with three to play, grabbed a vital half with Thomas Bjorn and Jose Maria Olazabal in the greensomes - where both players drive before choosing the best position from which to continue with alternate shots.

Montgomerie's side went to lunch 8-6 in front with Europe captain Seve Ballesteros going down to yet another defeat with Sergio Garcia against Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter.

The hosts got off to a good start as Swedes Jacobson and Fasth went nine under par for the 14 holes it took them to overcome Harrington and Lawrie in the opening game.

The German-French partnership of Cejka and Jacquelin then had their third win of the week, beating Casey and Brian Davis 3&2.

Montgomerie and Rose failed to win any of the first 15 holes but after winning the 16th, Rose hit his tee shot to the 213-yard next to six feet.

Montgomerie made the putt and then, off a fine Rose drive down the 466-yard last, hit his approach to three feet.

He will face Ballesteros in the first of the singles on Sunday when he will be trying to avoid a third successive defeat against the man now ranked 1,231st in the world.
