England's goalkeepers By Chris Woods England keeper 1985-93 |

The goalkeeping position is a bit worrying for England because outside of the top few we are struggling.
In previous years it has been a strong position for us - there used to be sometimes up to eight keepers capable of playing for England but we don't have that at the moment.
In Paul Robinson we have a really top-class first-choice goalkeeper and David James is a capable and experienced back-up.
But after that we have Scott Carson, who doesn't really have international experience and that's not ideal.
Going into a massive competition you'd like to think your players have been playing regularly for your country.
PAUL ROBINSON
 | Born: 15/10/79 Position: Goalkeeper England caps: 21 Club: Tottenham |
Robinson has come in and had some very good performances and established himself as the undisputed number one. He seems unflappable and is a real steadying and calm character to have behind the back four.
At the moment he is playing with a lot of confidence and, as well as being a solid keeper, he is capable of making match-winning saves.
Another good quality is his distribution of the ball, which is second to none.
He probably plays the ball out at the back with his feet as well as any of the centre halves.
DAVID JAMES
 | Born: 01/08/70 Position: Goalkeeper England caps: 34 Club: Manchester City |
He has all the attributes to be probably the best goalkeeper around. But unfortunately he has made one or two errors that have cost goals.
All goalkeepers do but when you are playing at international level you can't afford to make that many.
It has been unfortunate for him that at the same time Paul has come in and is not making those kind of errors.
James was part of the World Cup squad in 2002 and was the first choice at Euro 2004.
He has been around the scene, been number one and he'll still believe he can get the number one shirt back.
But when you've got someone in the form that Robinson is in it is going to be difficult for him.
SCOTT CARSON
 | Born: 03/09/85 Position: Goalkeeper England caps: 0 Club: Liverpool |
Obviously it's terrible for Robert Green to miss out on the World Cup after getting injured, but it gives Scott a chance to get involved.
I have seen a little bit of him and Nigel Martyn, who I coach at Everton, knows him from his days at Leeds.
He tells me that he is a good goalkeeper and has got plenty of potential.
It is unlikely that he will play much of a part in the World Cup - the goalkeeper position is not one to experiment with in a big tournament.
But just being part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad will be a fantastic experience for him and he can only learn from working alongside James and Robinson.
