ALL THE ACTION AS IT HAPPENED
FULL-TIME: Holland and Argentina hold each other to a 0-0 draw in Frankfurt. There were glimpses of brilliance from both sides but the two new-look line-ups seemed content to see the match out for the draw having already qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup.
"The Argentina players are congratulating each other because they got what they came for - and their play reflected a lack of desire or need to win the game."
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
90 mins+2: With possibly the last attack of the night, Rafael van der Vaart crosses hoping for a last-ditch goal. It comes to nothing and seconds later Carlos Tevez has a stab on goal but it misses the target. That brings the final whistle.
90 mins+1: There's just two minutes of injury time to play in Frankfurt.
90 mins: Holland could yet sneak a goal here. They get corner after corner to put the Argentine defence under pressure. For the time being, though, they can't get that telling header goalbound. Meanwhile, Javier Maschareno finds himself added to the referee's book for raking the back of Khalid Boulahrouz's leg.
"This game really has lacked urgency with key players being rested and both teams assured of qualification to the last 16."
Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport in Frankfurt
88 mins: Dirk Kuyt crosses towards the far post in the dying minutes but Roberto Ayala gets the header away and stops Phillip Cocu from what would have been a historic goal in his 100th appearance.
"If England were playing at this tempo, they would be heavily criticised. It really is quite pedestrian from both sides now."
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
86 mins: Hedwiges Maduro enters proceedings, Wesley Sneijder exits.
85 mins: Wesley Sneijder finds his turn blocked and it gives the Dutch a timely free-kick. Their dead ball specialist, Robin van Persie, however, is not on the field at the moment so Rafael van der Vaart steps up. It's easily followed by Roberto Abbondanzieri as it goes out.
83 mins: As a passing masterclass this has been spot on but it's not quite lived up to the pre-match billing as a dream tie in Frankfurt. A goal now looks highly unlikely.
81 mins: Interestingly the stats show it's been exactly 50-50 in terms of possession during the match. Tim de Cler and Rafael van der Vaart string together a series of passes in midfield - perhaps in a bid to alter those match percentages...?
79 mins: Tim de Cler gives the Argentine defence something to think about as he whips the ball into the box after some intelligent Dutch build-up. It's all for nothing sadly when the referee whistles for a foul. In the meantime, there's generous applause when Riquelme jogs off the field. Pablo Aimar's the man taking his spot.
77 mins: Argentina are spreading the ball across every quarter of the field. For the moment, they're starving the Dutch of possession. One wonders if it will build to the sort of wonder goal they pulled off against Serbia and Montenegro...
74 mins: Carlos Tevez initially gets in a tangle on the offensive but gets the ball back from Riquelme and unleashes a cracking shot. It forces a good save from Edwin van der Sar in the Dutch goalmouth.
72 mins: Holland are looking as bright as their orange shirts now with a much sparkier display in this half. They've put together a string of slick passes but still don't having the required edge in the final third of the field.
70 mins: Julio Cruz is the latest man on, in place of Lionel Messi. It brings some applause from a serious-faced Diego Maradona in the stands.
"You just wonder what Argentina would do if Holland scored. It's Holland that are looking to win the game, and you wonder if Argentina would have it in them to pick up the pace if they fell behind."
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
67 mins: Denny Landzaat dips into the fray at the expense of Robin van Persie.
66 mins: Rafael van der Vaart takes a tumble under the advances of Fabricio Coloccini in the Argentine penalty area... but rightly no penalty is awarded. Then Phillip Cocu has a shot as Argentina grapple to get their defenders back... but it's off target.
65 mins: Carlos Tevez controls the ball on his chest in space in the box and looks set to have a shot on goal. But the attention of the Dutch defenders quashes what looked an excellent scoring opportunity.
64 mins: Cambiasso goes to the sidelines briefly but he's fine and makes an immediate impact on his return with a pass to Riquelme in the box. He's smothered by orange and the move dissipates.
62 mins: Cambiasso looks in a spot of discomfort after stumbling awkwardly. It's difficult to know how serious it is but he's grimacing as he holds his right knee.
PLAYER RATER: Argentina trio Carlos Tevez, Juan Riquelme and Lionel Messi are catching the eye among those rating players. They are the top three rated players in this game, with Messi leading the way on a mark of 8.7.
"I have a bit of sympathy for Ruud van Nistelrooy - I feel he suffered a little bit at Man Utd last season and he is suffering a bit here now. But then he hasn't really had a great deal of service." (see 56 mins)
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
59 mins: Gabriel Milito, with arguably one of the biggest hairdos at this World Cup, arcs the ball from one flank to the other. He picks out Carlos Tevez initially but for all his weaving and darting, the orange shirts of Holland stand firm.
57 mins: Esteban Cambiasso looks as though he's just received some truly devestating news when he picks up a yellow card.
56 mins: Holland put the Argentine defence under pressure with some slick passing but Leandro Cufre loops the ball over his head to clear the danger. After that, Ryan Babel replaces Ruud van Nistelrooy.
"Lionel Messi is wearing boots with Le Mano de Dios (The Hand of God) inscribed on them. As if England fans need or want reminding, it's in reference to Diego Maradona's first goal against them in the 1986 World Cup."
Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport in Frankfurt
53 mins: Riquelme and Messi combine with aplomb. Riquelme takes the final pass but gets a bit caught up with his shot. It has enough power but not enough accuracy - it's about a metre wide.
50 mins: Rafael van der Vart, with virtually his first move of note in the match, turns in the box to fashion a shot but he is dispossessed before he gets the chance. It merely paves the way for some more Lionel Messi jiggery-pokery.
48 mins: Tim de Cler gets yellow carded for a overtly rough challenge on Maxi Rodriguez. He can't really have any dispute over that one.
47 mins: Roberto Abbondanzieri barks instructions like a military general as he coaxes his troops for a Robin van Persie free-kick. You sort of wonder why he bothered, bearing in mind the Dutch effort ends up high in the stands.
PLAYER RATER: Fans who reacted to a poll on Player Rater believe Argentina and Holland will be relatively unconcerned about winning Group C. More than half believe both sides will be happy to take their chances against any other team in the tournament, though 27% highlight the potential of greasing their path to the final by topping the group. But 19% say neither will be worried, given that England are likely quarter-final opponents!
46 mins: Argentina get play under way once more in Frankfurt. Almost immediately, Javier Mascherano has a go from long range... but he probably wishes he hadn't. It wasn't pretty.
"There's not been a lot of shots or end product but what holds your attention is the fact you know there are players on show who can do something special in a heartbeat. But Argentina are playing at about 50% in my view - I think they're saying to themselves 'look, we're top of the group and, if things stay as they are, we'll stay top of the group'."
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
HALF-TIME: Argentina and Holland remain goal-less at the interval in Frankfurt. The Argentines look the better of the two line-ups with some electric running and passing by some of their more creative players. But that whittled out a little in the dying minutes of the half and Holland did just enough to hold on.
45 mins+1: The orange shirts seemingly part as Messi darts down the middle of the pitch. He has a crack at goal but Edwin van der Sar is up to the challenge and performs a little hop and skip as he catches it.
45 mins: There's just one minute of time added on in this half.
44 mins: You can empathise with Argentina and Barcelona fans when they wax lyrical about Lionel Messi. He produces half-a-dozen moves from his box of tricks in quick succession. While awesome viewing and totally hypnotic for Holland's defenders, they come to nought.
42 mins: Holland perform a bit of yo-yo heading, in part possibly to avoid Argentina's slick passing along the turf. Amid all of it, Andre Ooijer is yellow carded for scissoring Riquelme's limbs in the tackle.
"Dirk Kuyt doesn't appear to be in the referee's good books - he's been yellow carded and quite a few decisions appear to have gone against him already." (see 38 mins)
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
39 mins: The tempo and thrill of this game has briefly evaporated but you get the impression that'll only be shortlived.
38 mins: Dirk Kuyt and referee Luis Medina Cantalejo don't seem the best of pals in Frankfurt tonight. They've already had a few words and will probably have some more after Kuyt is deemed to have handballed when controlling a cross. For what it's worth, the referee was wrong on this occasion.
35 mins: Wesley Sneijder gets hold of the ball from 30 yards but it hits Roberto Ayala and massively ricochets out for a corner. It briefly curtails the mounting Argentine pressure.
33 mins: The pace with which Argentina turn the game is incredible. This time, Lionel Messi pokes the ball through for Maxi Rodriguez but all Rodriguez can do is clatter the side netting.
"There is a relentless drum beat from the Argentine section of fans and the South American contingent just will not stop singing as they create a delightful atmosphere. But the Holland supporters are in subdued form."
Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport in Frankfurt
30 mins: The shot of the night - to date - belongs to Maxi Rodriguez. He catches the ball on the up and very nearly half-volleys it into the goal. It shaves the post and all he can do is put his head in his hands in exasperation.
29 mins: Riquelme swipes a free-kick into the box, which Khalid Boulahrouz smacks off his own post to just fend off the interest of Carlos Tevez.
28 mins: Dirk Kuyt is the first booking for the night as he blocks off Carlos Tevez.
27 mins: Riquelme turns in a stunning corner from the left side. Edwin van der Sar just punches it over but doesn't look all that relaxed about it in the process.
"When Holland attack, Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Riquelme don't ever go back to defend for Argentina - and it is making for a very open game."
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
25 mins: Leandro Cufre rolls over four times on the turf before waving to his bench after Robin van Persie challenges strongly. It's slightly excessive from Cufre but he wins a free-kick nonetheless.
24 mins: Nicolas Burdisso comes off and is replaced by Fabricio Coloccini - a very early change.
23 mins: Ayala couldn't be angrier if he tried. There's loads of shoulder shrugging and referee-bating after he concedes a free-kick for fouling Ruud van Nistelrooy. You can understand his frustration - what he did looked fairly innocuous.
21 mins: Roberto Ayala slides in for a superb challenge to give Phillip Cocu something to think about in his 100th Dutch appearance.
18 mins: Dirk Kuyt finds the target with a belting strike. It is saved and he wins a corner. There's some cracking end-to-end stuff going on out there.
16 mins: Argentina look electric on the break, suddenly adding the sort of pace they showed against Serbia and Montenegro from nowhere. Maxi Rodriguez, a double goal scorer in that match, is the major threat on this occasion as he paves the way for a Carlos Tevez strike which is just wide.
"That is a definite penalty - Ooijer was clearly pulled over inside the box - and the referee gave it the other way!" (see 13 mins)
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
13 mins: Nicolas Burdisso is doing his utmost to put in an early shout for an Oscar after a dramatic tumble to the turf after grappling with Ruud van Nistelrooy. Meanwhile, television replays show Holland should have won a penalty after Gabriel Milito dragged down Andre Ooijer in the box.
11 mins: Robin van Persie does so much hopping over the ball on his break down the right flank he nearly flumoxes himself and has a comedy stumble. In the end, he just about gets a cross in and it brings Holland's first corner of the match.
8 mins: There's a gargantuan cheer every time Lionel Messi gets the ball. The Argentine fans love him and you can understand why. He very nearly sends Esteban Cambiasso through to score but Khalid Boulahrouz slides in perfectly to dispossess Cambiasso.
6 mins: Riquelme whips in a corner but Robin van Persie dives in to head it out for another corner. A second corner from Riquelme lands straight into Edwin van der Sar's grasp.
4 mins: Robin van Persie brings some sharp intakes of breath from the crowd with a tasty cross. Roberto Abbondanzieri cooly leaps from between his posts to take it unchallenged.
PLAYER RATER: Holland and Argentina may have rested some influential players, but Player Rater aficianados are still expecting a wonderful encounter. Of those who responded to a poll on Player Rater, an overwhelming 79% insist this game WILL be the classic everyone is hoping for.
2 mins: Holland dominate proceedings in the opening two minutes. It remains to be seen whether that will set the theme for the match.
2000 BST: Holland get proceedings going in the latest match-up between two of the great sides in World Cup history.
PRE-MATCH BUILD-UP
1958 BST: Time to make friends is the theme of this World Cup and, looking at the crowd, with Argentina and Dutch fans sat side-by-side, that's certainly being endorsed here tonight.
Mark Saggers, Five Live Sport
1957 BST: Not all of Argentina's players join in their national anthem, Himno Nacional Argentino - very few of them in fact. Their fans, though, do the song justice - well, one of the epic's eight verses.
1955 BST: The Dutch link arms for their national anthem, the Wilhelmus, which is the oldest national anthem in the world. The 16th-century tune, in honour of William of Orange, proves a popular one with the thousands of Dutch supporters.
1952 BST: The teams are all now lined up in the tunnels. There's something nervous-looking faces despite the fact both teams are already through to the tournament's knock-out stages. One man, however, looking less nervous is Diego Maradona, who's all smiles in his Argentina shirt in the stands.
1947 BST: Argentine teenage prodigy Lionel Messi will be aiming to reinforce the clamber for him to start. He received a thunderous roar and the biggest cheer from his country's fans when the teams were announced. He and the rest of the players had just left after their warm-up with top place in Group C to play for - meaning a meeting with Mexico instead of Portugal.
Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport in Frankfurt
1943 BST: There's been some cracking rivalry between these two sides since the 1978 World Cup final, which Argentina won 3-1. The most recent tournament memory was the two sides' quarter-final in 1998, which Holland won courtesy of Dennis Bergkamp's strike.
1937 BST: Dutch fans will be hoping to avoid a repeat of the clothing fiasco in the game against Ivory Coast. Hundreds of fans had turned up for the match in bright orange lederhosen emblazoned with the name of a rival to one of the World Cup's corporate sponsors. Stewards infomed them they weren't allowed into the ground with such garments on so they duly stripped down to their underwear for the game!
1930 BST: It's a historic night for Phillip Cocu, who will win his 100th international cap when he walks out onto the pitch tonight.
1919 BST: There's some new-look line-ups in Frankfurt for the climax to Group C. Injuries and yellow cards have forced the hand of Holland coach Marco van Basten, who drops card worries Mark van Bommel, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Arjen Robben, Joris Mathijsen and the injured John Heitinga. In come Kew Jaliens, Tim de Cler, Khalid Boulahrouz, Rafael van der Vaart and Dirk Kuyt.
Lionel Messi makes his first start of the World Cup for Argentina with Carlos Tevez in attack at the expense of Hernan Crespo and Javier Saviola. Also getting a start are Gabriel Milito and Leandro Cufre.
