The left-back, who was born in Cardiff and raised in Merthyr Tydfil, started Monday's 2-0 win over Millwall.

At 16 years and 273 days old Bale is the second youngest Saints debutant behind Theo Walcott, who made his debut when aged 16 years and 143 days.

"The chance has come sooner than I expected and I want to keep building on it," Bale told the Southampton website.

"It's a really good bonus. I've been working hard in the Under-18s and the reserves.

"I've been playing well and had a really good season. I want to get to the top level as soon as possible."

Bale was handed his opportunity by Saints manager George Burley after Danny Higginbotham was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

"Danny getting injured leaves us short in that department and Gareth has got a big future at the club," Burley said.
