Bobby Charlton was among those dragged from the wreckage by United keeper Harry Gregg, who somehow pulled him - still strapped into his seat, which had become detached from its fixings - clear of the plane.

Charlton was the first survivor to leave hospital, and arrived back in Manchester on 14 February 1958, eight days after the crash.

The man who would go on to lift the 1966 World Cup with England, and play more than 750 games for United, was only 20 years old.

And as he convalesced in Manchester he was pictured kicking a ball around in the streets with local children.
