The ankle injury suffered by Leicester's England under-21 star Joe Mattock is not as bad as first thought.

The 18-year-old defender was stretchered off in the Carling Cup tie against Stockport but hospital scans showed his ankle was not broken.

"It looks like he has sustained serious ligament damage which will keep him sidelined for several weeks," manager Nigel Pearson told the club website.

"But the outcome is certainly better than we had initially envisaged."

Pearson said the defender is now back at the Foxes' training ground where the medical team will continue to assess his condition.
