Get behind Burgess, says Holloway

Ben Burgess
Striker Ben Burgess has scored six goals for Blackpool this season

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has called for the club's supporters to get behind Ben Burgess after the striker was booed during Monday's derby against Preston.

Burgess was substituted with 13 minutes remaining at Bloomfield Road, but Holloway said it was purely tactical and not because of his performance.

"I do wish people would lay off Ben," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"I heard far too many people shout and bawl but some of his football and some of his skills are frightening."

Burgess, who began his career with near-neighbours Blackburn, joined Blackpool in August 2006 from Hull City.

After scoring five goals in his debut season for the Championship club, he reached double figures the following season.

And although his tally dropped to six last time round, the Buxton-born striker has already reached that total during the current campaign.

"He's got bad knees and might not score from 35-yards with a ripper in the top corner anymore," said Holloway. "But hopefully Charlie Adam will instead.

"I didn't think we played quite as well when he came off because he does link things brilliantly.

"But I've got some fantastic forwards and I'm going to swap them and change them around. I saw [Jose] Mourinho do it a few years ago with his wide players.

"To be fair there's not a lot wrong in other positions and on any given day somebody might come on and with a bit of magic score us the winner."
