Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood will be out of action for up to three months after breaking a bone in a foot.
Harewood, 30, had been on loan at Championship leaders Newcastle until the end of December and the Magpies were hoping to agree another stint.
The ex-West Ham star will have surgery on the metatarsal injury suffered in training and faces being sidelined for much of the rest of the season.
Harewood had also been linked with a loan move back to the Hammers.
Hull City were also reportedly interested in the player, who began his career at Nottingham Forest in 1996.
Harewood ended last season at Wolves and has only started one Premier League game for Villa.
