Lee Dixon on Henry
Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon played with the club's all-time top scorer Thierry Henry and the man whose record he has beaten, Ian Wright, during his time at Highbury.

Here, he gives BBC Sport an insight into life with the top marksmen and reveals why he thought Wright's goal tally would never be overtaken.

WRIGHT - THE OUT-AND-OUT GOAL SCORER

I always thought playing with Wrighty was the most exhilarating experience anyone could have.

Ian Wright
Wright is still one of Highbury's greatest heroes

He was really off the cuff, no-one knew what he was going to do - I think Ian didn't know half the time.

But he was inspirational, a real one-off and an out-and-out goalscorer.

He could score you every type of goal imaginable - with either foot, with his knee, the back of the head, anything!

He was always in the right place at the right time. He got a lot of six-yard goals, but lots from outside of the box too.

I really didn't think Wright's record would be broken.

HENRY IN AT THE DEEP END

When Thierry arrived at Arsenal there was a bit of mystery about where he was going to play.

He was playing left wing at Juventus, but we heard rumours the boss, Arsene Wenger, was going to play him up front.

So we expected this lad to come in and be a goalscorer straight away but that wasn't the case.

Although he had plenty of speed and ability, he didn't really know how to play the position.

He struggled a bit at the beginning and he didn't look like he was going to get many goals at all.

THE GOAL RUSH

But the boss had tremendous faith in Thierry and saw something in him that nobody - perhaps not even Thierry himself - did.

Thierry missed some chances in the first few games he played and perhaps didn't look comfortable in the position.

But, although it took a little time, the boss remained patient and the players did, too.

And Thierry exploded into a goal-scoring machine.

He has become the complete centre forward - he is unmarkable.

Thierry is so quick that a lot of his goals come when he runs from outside the box, sprints past everyone in sight and is left with only the keeper to beat.

DRESSING ROOM PERSONAS

They are quite different - with Thierry calm and assured and Wrighty more like a firework going off.

But both are infectious in their own way.

Thierry is a big favourite in the dressing room, although he is a bit more serious than Wrighty.

He contemplates his game a lot and is a deep thinker - but he is up for a laugh, gets involved in the practical jokes and is good fun to be around.

Wrighty, though, was constantly hyperactive and he was playing jokes every minute.

But both fitted in straight away when they joined (Wright in 1991, Henry in 1999), and that is not always easy at a big club.

As people, they also built up an instant rapport and there's a lot of respect between the two of them.

Had they actually played together for the club, there's little doubt they would have become even closer friends.

And on the pitch, I'm sure Thierry looked at Wrighty's game and it helped him develop into a better player.

MY FAVOURITE WRIGHT AND HENRY MOMENTS

My favourite Wrighty moment came in a European Cup quarter-final away at Auxerre in 1995.

We were getting a real pasting in midfield and I remember trying to make an overlap round Wrighty and shouting for the ball.

He completely ignored me - like he did most of the time.

And then he hit this shot with the outside of his boot and it went straight in the top corner.

It was a wonderful goal - which won the tie for us - and it sticks in my mind.

The strike that stands out for me from Thierry was the goal against Manchester United in 2000.

I was injured and watching the game from the directors' box and had a great view.

Thierry had his back to goal - facing me - and he flipped the ball up as Gary Neville tried to close him down and hit this unbelievable shot over Fabien Barthez's head.

I scored goals like that in training!

But Henry does, and Wrighty used to, do it all the time when it matters - and their great talent mixed with their confidence is what sets them apart.
