Gary Neville: Usually England's Mr Reliable, but not one of his best nights. Had trouble locating Yalcin, and his distribution was below par.

Ashley Cole: Defensive requirements curtailed his attacking inclinations. Coped well, considering Gerrard offered little cover in front of him.

John Terry: Best tribute that can be paid to him is that Rio Ferdinand was not missed. Strong in the air, solid on the deck. A rock.

Sol Campbell: Calm and unflappable, ideal presence to nurse Terry through a potentially difficult night. Kept Hakan Sukur quiet.

Nicky Butt: The base of the midfield 'diamond' but hardly effective. Rarely got close enough to Emre to knock him out of his stride.

Steven Gerrard: Displayed his usual range and vision of passing, but his natural tendency to pinch infield often left Cole exposed down the left flank.

Paul Scholes: The pick of England's midfield. Offered his side's biggest goal threat and despite being the sharp end of the diamond, insatiable work-rate ensured he did his defensive share.

David Beckham: Effective without being spectacular. Given a role and stuck to it. Luckily, the worst penalty miss in history was not costly.

Emile Heskey: Has discovered a new role - the striker not required to score. Bags of running, and a physical presence, but how many shots at goal did he have?

Wayne Rooney: Certainly not cowed by the occasion, but just lacked that certainty of first touch needed to be a menace at the very top level.

Darius Vassell (replaced Emile Heskey): Perhaps not on long enough to make an impact, but still carried more of a goal threat than Heskey.

Kieron Dyer (replaced Wayne Rooney): The injection of his pace was a canny move to ensure Turkey could never throw the kitchen sink in the final stages.
