Gerrard: the performance
Gerrard's passing against Russia

Gerrard's display against Russia in the 3-0 win at Wembley last year offered a marked contrast. Without Lampard, and using Barry as his safety net, he was far more involved further up the pitch.

Although he passed fewer times than Lampard (35 as opposed to 55) many of them were into central areas and were longer, indicating his attempts to be more direct.

Statistics also show that he was more willing to pass to the front men, with Michael Owen being his top pass receiver and Emile Heskey also featuring high on his list of intended targets.

In these two examples Gerrard and Lampard got forward to receive the ball in the final third on a similar number of occasions but while Lampard was more willing to patrol the central third of the pitch moving laterally, Gerrard stayed more within the width of the penalty area, at either end.
