We said before the game that England needed a good result.
Terry enjoyed a fine start to his reign as England captain |
They also needed a good performance and needed to get rid of all the negativity that's been forced upon them from the World Cup. Steve McClaren could not have had a better start than this.
I know it's pre-season, I know it's a friendly and I know we've been here before.
But nevertheless, England have done what's been asked of them. It looks encouraging.
The big plus point for me was how everyone looked comfortable on the ball and played with a bit of freedom. The midfield worked, particularly with Owen Hargreaves sitting in the middle.
It was a great start for John Terry to get a goal in his first game as captain.
And Peter Crouch got two. He has an impressive record at international level now with eight in 12 games.
Steve McClaren will be so pleased with how they looked comfortable in midfield with Hargreaves holding.
Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard both looked free and played the way we've seen them play for their clubs.
I don't think we've seen that at international level when they've both been in the team together.
With one sitting behind them, they both could go forward and play their normal games.
Steve McClaren has got exactly what he wanted tonight.
It was a poor Greece side, but you can only go out and beat what's in front of you.
But it was about England tonight, it wasn't about Greece. And I thought England performed really well.
 | Owen Hargreaves is now arguably first on the team sheet for England |
Yes, we would have liked them to have gone out and scored three or four goals in the second half, but we know that rarely happens. Also, with the Premiership just around the corner, a few of the players in the second half would have been thinking 'just look after yourself'.
Crouch is always in and around the six-yard area, he wants to score goals. His goal record is phenomenal for England.
Owen Hargreaves is now arguably first on the team sheet for England.
I would have been pleased for us to have just come out and played at a tempo which would have caused Greece problems.
But I thought we were really quite emphatic at the start, we passed the ball at pace.
 | They were under a lot of pressure after the World Cup - but they did a good job |
The whole display was at pace. Everybody was making good moves, getting the ball and making it happen quickly. We just looked really sharp and really about ourselves and I thought it was a really good message we sent out.
I was impressed with the way the boys went about the job.
They were under a lot of pressure off the back of the World Cup, I think they just came out and did a good job.
True, they could have had better opposition, but you can only beat what's there and we beat them quite convincingly.
