Lineker's tournament verdict: Sweden

By Gary Lineker
BBC's Match of the Day presenter

The quarter-finals were not a happy time for Sven-Goran Eriksson.

First England bowed out on penalties to Portugal and then Sweden, the land of his birth, went out in equally painful circumstances.

Being honest, over the course of the game they did not quite deserve to beat the Dutch, despite having a few chances of their own.

But it was such a cruel exit after some exciting play throughout the squad in the group stages.

I'd said Henrik Larsson's decision to come out of international retirement would have a major effect and it took him less than an hour into the tournament to notch up his first two goals.

He was by no means the only star. Freddie Ljunberg showed invention and Zlatan Ibrahimovic proved a handful for most defences.
