Marks out of 10 for the England players in the 1-1 draw against Japan at the City of Manchester Stadium.David James: Will not be happy at the manner in which he conceded Japan's equaliser, but spared England's blushes with a late save from Alex.
Gary Neville: Failed to provide any real threat going forward down the right flank, and Japan's equaliser came from his area of the field.
Sol Campbell: Must share collective responsibility for the equaliser. One chance to win it late on with a header from a corner which went wide.
John Terry: Almost scored his first international goal with an early header from a corner. Part of a defence which looked vulnerable at times in the second half.
Ashley Cole: Made some solid defensive tackles and looked impressive going forward in support of Steven Gerrard down the left.
David Beckham: Some classy touches from the England captain but too often his crosses failed to find a target. Limped off late on.
Paul Scholes: Did little to ease his fears about losing his place for Euro 2004. Lucky to survive a penalty appeal for a tackle on Alex just before the break.
Steven Gerrard: Still a driving force despite being moved from the centre to the left of midfield. His stinging low shot led to Owen's opening goal.
Frank Lampard: Made an assured, if unspectacular case for inclusion in the starting line-up for Euro 2004. One well timed run and shot over the bar.
Wayne Rooney: Little chance to pose a goalscoring threat but made some neat touches in build-up play and almost created a second goal for Owen.
Michael Owen: Made no mistake with a cool finish for the opening goal. Denied a second by keeper Seigo Narazaki after brilliantly beating his man.
SubstitutesKieron Dyer (replaced Paul Scholes, 77 mins): Tried to mount a couple of attacks, but little time to impress.
Emile Heskey (replaced Wayne Rooney, 77 mins): A low cross from the left was all he found time for.
Darius Vassell (replaced Michael Owen, 77 mins): Looked lively as he tried to prove his fitness after a hamstring injury.
Nicky Butt (replaced Frank Lampard, 82 mins): Little chance to show that he should be picked ahead of Lampard.
Owen Hargreaves (replaced David Beckham, 82 mins): Tried one curling shot which went straight to the keeper.
Joe Cole (replaced Steven Gerrard, 82 mins): One shot late on which went well wide.
Phillip Neville (replaced Gary Neville, 86 mins): Came on for his injured brother and had little to do.
Ledley King (replaced John Terry, 88 mins): His fourth cap was a fleeting affair.
